A New Era for Digital Literacy in Albania
An informative session was held at the Musine Kokalari Library, bringing together representatives from UNICEF Albania, the Municipality of Tirana, and staff from several of the city’s libraries and administrative units. The event introduced the innovative “BiblioTech” concept — a project designed to empower children and young people with essential digital skills.
About the BiblioTech Initiative
BiblioTech is an initiative of the Municipality of Tirana, supported by UNICEF Albania, and implemented by the Albania Sustainable Development Organization (ASDO).
The project aims to transform four of Tirana’s public libraries — Hamit Beqja, Misto Treska, Musine Kokalari, and Aleksandër Moisiu — into interactive technology hubs dedicated to ICT education, online safety, and digital literacy.
These modernized libraries will serve as safe and inclusive spaces for:
- Children and youth passionate about technology and innovation
- Professionals, startups, and incubators
- Community activities that promote digital education and online protection
Equipping Libraries for the Digital Generation
The ASDO implementation team presented the project’s concept, planned activities, and details about the equipment available in the new BiblioTech tech corners. Each library will feature:
- Dedicated computer stations and multimedia equipment
- “Friendly Wi-Fi” connections ensuring a safe online experience for young users
- Spaces designed for training, innovation workshops, and creative collaboration
Engaging the Community
Participants discussed how the community can become actively involved in the BiblioTech program through events, coding clubs, and ICT-related activities. The conversation also highlighted the importance of cyber safety and the “Friendly Wi-Fi” filtering system, which blocks harmful and adult content, ensuring a secure environment for children.
Next Steps and Collaboration
All four libraries will work closely with the Municipality of Tirana and ASDO to organize continuous activities for children, youth, and community members.
ASDO will continue providing technical assistance and guidance, while participants have already received user manuals and information materials for the new equipment.
